Born in Brixton in the 60s to a Jamaican household, Mikey Don grew up hearing authentic West Indian Reggae music on the gramophone.
His family, originally from New Green, Mandeville, Jamaica, came to the UK during the Windrush Generation and were very much part of the West Indian community in Brixton.
Growing up listening to Sound Clash tapes and artists such as Alton Ellis, Dennis Brown, Bob Marley, Gregory Isaacs, and other greats, influenced Mikey’s love of music. Although wanting to be a singer, his sights changed towards being a DJ marking the birth of Mikey Don who later went on to create Rough But Sweet Sound System.
Mikey Don, Throughout the years has mastered a wide range of genres from Reggae, to Garage and everything in between.
Events & Media Manager - Lady Boss
Born to an Irish household living on Railton Road, Brixton in the late 70s, Lady Boss grew up around both the Irish and West Indian communities in SW9. Lady Boss’ love of music evolved from listening to the background ambience at the time, being mainly Roots & Reggae music and being taken to local Shubbeens by her father who himself was very much a part of the West Indian community.
Joining Rough But Sweet three years ago, Lady Boss brings with her a unique skillset which she applies to managing all events, media and promoting the Rough But Sweet Brand.
Sound Engineer - Glen T
Glen T started off in 1970 playing public Houses, Shubbeens & House parties playing with 2 speaker boxes a 30 watt Northcourt Amplifier& A Collaro Record Deck. The speaker boxes had a Fane Pop 12 inch 50 watt speaker and the other box had a 6 inch Elac speaker and an old gram speaker used as a tweeter. That setup was considered to be loud and there was not any complaints from the crowds who loved to party. House parties were common because halls were not available to us and we usually played into early morning sometimes to 9am.
Technical Engineer - ThatWhippett
From young, Whippett has always had a love for technology and how it worked much to the detriment of his father who always had to work out how to put back together what he’d destroyed. This led to Whippett’s further knowledge of electronics both hardware and software in all departments, be it building PCs, Cinematography or helping his Dad (Glen T) with his Sound System Equipment.
Whippett has studied in Advanced Computer Sciences and has honed in his skills over the years not allowing anything to beat him. What he doesn’t know he gets to know. A sign of his father’s fighting spirit.
Whippett also has an extensive knowledge of music, typically on Vinyl, and is the youngest crew member of Love TKO Sound System. He now takes care of the full range of technological needs of Rough But Sweet Sound System.
