The Original Green Machine - est. 1989

Rough But Sweet Sound System was created by Mikey Don in 1989, Originally a Sound System used for house parties, pubs and small events like christenings, weddings, parties and funerals. The original crew consisted of Mikey Don, Digital, MC Ragga Yute. The crew later expanded with other members including Santa Cruz, Simple Simon, Asha Dread, Scandal Willy and Blackfinger.

The early 90s saw Rough But Sweet enter into the clash arena with it’s first clash at “Bring Your Selector And Come”

The following years saw Rough But Sweet Sound System play throughout the UK at various Clubs, Pubs and West Indian Centres such as The Hayfield in Leeds, Trends in North London & Hilltop in Kent. The list is endless.

In 1990 Rough But Sweet Sound System played their first Notting Hill Carnival in Conlan Street, W10 relocating to Hazlewood Crescent, W10 5DJ where you can still find us.

During this period, Rough But Sweet gave the leading German Sound of the time “PowPow Movement” the opportunity of playing their first Notting Hill Carnival. Amongst the crew was an up and coming MC, now known as the artist “Gentleman” A friendship and collaboration grew from this which led to Rough But Sweet playing annually at various venues in Germany such as Gloria’s and The Petty Prince Club.

During 1996, Rough But Sweet’s Sound System was hired by LP International Sound (USA) for the World Clash. Clashing 4×4 Exodus (Jamaica) and Luv Injection (UK), LP won the clash, A victory for Puma and Lee Major.

Rough But Sweet Sound System is a member of B.A.S.S and one of the Licensed Static Sound Systems of Notting Hill Carnival and has over three decades of continuous service, only taking a break from the streets during the COVID -19 outbreak where they had an online presence.

Rough But Sweet continue to play at numerous events throughout the year and are always available for hire.
